The materials you choose for your bathroom remodeling project have a major impact on the look and feel of the room. The type and style of the material you use will decide the feeling you get when you walk in. You want your bathroom to be a relaxing and comfortable place, and the components that make up the room are what set the tone. Of course, this is entirely dependent on what is relaxing to you. Some things to consider when choosing your material are aesthetic, maintenance, and cost. It is important to go over some of these options so that you can make the best decision for you. 

Showers

The shower has a huge impact on the look and feel of your bathroom, and the materials that makes up your shower can dramatically change how comfortable and relaxing your bathroom feels. Knowing what materials are available to you and choosing the right one is imperative to having a successful shower remodel, and creating the bathroom you desire. 

Fiberglass and Acrylic - The quickest and  most budget friendly shower and tub installs are our pre-fabricated fiberglass and acrylic shower units. These are made to scale ahead of time and are brought in and sealed into place. These are your standard shower and bath combos that you see in most homes. Custom options are available but the cheapest way to go is to have your bathroom designed around a standard model so that it can be readily available and easily installed.

In the fiberglass and acrylic pre-fabricated category, you have multiple part shower kits, wall kits, and one-piece units or one-piece combos. This is a great option for a shower or bath remodel

The multiple part shower kits include a bathtub or a shower pan, separate pieces for the walls and doors. All of the components fit tightly together to ensure the structure is water tight.

The wall kits include just the walls of the shower but not the floor. This allows you to pick a custom finish for the floor of the shower.

One-piece units include a shower or tub or both and consist of one large piece of fiberglass or acrylic. These are typically installed in new construction homes due to their large stature as they do not fit easily through doorways. The upside of this style is that there are few joints meaning that there is a reduced risk of mold and mildew. 

Ceramic and Porcelain Tile -  Choosing the tile option allows for the highest level of custom design. Tile comes in a vast variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures which make it perfectly suited for creating any style of shower you can think of. You can mix and match different tiles for the floor, walls, and ceiling to create the exact shower you have dreamed of. If you like the idea of a sleek tile shower but don’t want to design it, we can help with that too. We have many simple and complex design options that you can pick from.

Stone Tile -  If you are looking for the epitome of luxury in your shower and cost is not a concern to you, then consider stone as your material of choice. When you hear “stone” you may think that it yields a kind of primitive look, but stone actually is extremely versatile in the ways that it can be used in a shower remodel and the aesthetic that it sets for the room. Stone works great in all types of design schemes including modern ones. Because stone is a naturally formed material, each piece is unique and gives off slightly different tones, patterns and textures. Stone will instantly make your shower look high class if you chose, and goes well with natural looking materials like wood, brass or marble.

Although stone is very durable, it is more porous than the other options. The tiny holes in the stone can trap scum and debris so the stone is sealed after installation. The sealant does wear off with time however, and must be treated again.

Counter Top and Vanity

Similar to the counter tops and cabinets in your kitchen, the bathroom vanity is a keystone in the foundation of how your bathroom will look and feel. There are several options to choose from when deciding on a bathroom countertop material and each have their own benefits and shortcomings. Whichever option you choose, our pros will be able to cut and install with seamless precision so your bathroom will look amazing in the end.

Cultured Marble - Cultured marble is a manufactured material made from mixing resin with marble dust. Because it is not natural stone, cultured marble comes is a cost effective option. It is durable, however, it can stain and is not as heat resistant as some other materials. This option comes in many different colors and gives the appearance of natural stone without the high cost.

Plastic Laminate - Laminate gets a bad reputation because it is a cheaper option and when people think of laminate they imagine an ugly pattern or color that their grandmother had in her kitchen from the 70's. However, laminate has come a long way over the years. While it is not the most durable option it is one of the most cost effective. Laminate has an endless possibility for colors and patterns, even ones that look like stone and granite. This material is very easy to clean and is resistant to stains, but can be damage by abrasive cleaning utensils. 

Granite - Granite is what comes to mind when most people think of luxury countertops and vanities. This is a beautiful natural stone material that is heavy and durable. It's extreme durability and luxurious look makes it a popular choice among homeowners for both bathrooms and kitchens. Granite is resistant to heat, scratches, water, and stains so you likely will not have to worry about weathering on your granite over the years.  The variety of natural colors and patterns make granite an excellent choice for custom designs. The only downside to granite is the cost. The price of granite has come down slightly in recent years, but of the countertop materials, it is at the upper end of the price range.

Other Natural Stone Options - There are several other natural stone materials that are great options to consider for you bathroom counter top. Marble is a natural stone that gives a classic and timeless look. Marble is more expensive than granite and not as durable as granite or some of the manufactured stones so it has become less popular in recent years. Marble is still widely considered a luxurious material for bathrooms and is a great option if you do not mind the price tag. 

Quartzite or "quartz" is another popular natural stone material. Quartz is distinguishable by its unique and bold veining patterns throughout the stone. Quartz, like granite, is very durable. It is resistant to heat, scratches and stains. Quartz however, is generally less expensive than granite and marble making it an increasingly popular options for bathroom and kitchen countertops.

Flooring For Bathrooms

Lets talk flooring for your bathroom. When picking a floor for your bathroom, we of course need to consider what you want, but we also need to consider what materials are smart to use for a bathroom floor. Because of the moisture in full bathrooms, half baths are an exception, it is best to stay away from real hardwood and carpet. Now that we have talked you out of putting carpet in your bathroom (kidding), lets look at some of the popular options for bathroom flooring!

Ceramic Tiles - Tile floors in a bathroom are one of the most popular ways to go. Tile is durable, water proof and stain resistant. For flooring, there are even tiles that are certified slip resistant which is a good idea for a bathroom where water can make things slippery. There are many possibilities when considering design in a tile floor. Tile comes in all different shapes, sizes and colors. To narrow down your options, it is recommended to pick something other than white for the floor because white is difficult to keep clean. Also, consider the color scheme of you shower and vanity to look for inspiration in the tile design.  Tile can be very cost efficient or very expensive depending on the type of tile you choose, but we generally consider this as the middle option when it comes to price. 

Vinyl or Linoleum - This option is the most budget friendly material that we can recommend for bathrooms. Using a large sheet of this material is recommended because it will produce a seam free floor to your bathroom. Vinyl and Linoleum are easy to clean, waterproof, and scratch resistant which makes them a great option for the money. A good quality vinyl will look great in any bathroom. Vinyl comes in several different textures, and every color you can imagine. Although this is a more budget friendly option, it is not for the lack of variety and potential design options that can be implemented with it. Vinyl is also relatively easy to install, making it low cost on the labor side, and is even a favorite among DIY gurus.

Laminate - If you have your heart set on the look of hardwood or perhaps a unique natural stone, consider laminate flooring. It is possible to have natural hardwood in your bathroom, but we do not recommend it. Hardwood and water are not friends, and a small amount of water can cause thousands in damage to your hardwood floors. Laminate is an engineered material that is waterproof, will not scratch, dent or crack, is low maintenance, and easy to clean. This material is also an order of magnitude cheaper than hardwood or natural stone. Laminate was designed with bathrooms in mind which is why it is one of our favorite materials to use in our projects. Laminate is a material that is made to mimic materials like wood and stone, and in many cases you cannot tell the difference unless someone tells you. It is truly the top option for bathrooms today on all fronts, and we highly recommend giving laminate careful consideration.​
